How could I honestly call myself a geek if I didn’t have at least a small interest in Star Wars. Good thing is…I LOVE Star Wars. The whole Star Wars universe is something that I find to be extremely fascinating and enjoyable. Growing up, I remember going to the high school basketball practice where my dad coached and going to the team room to watch Star Wars episodes 4-6 on the “big” tv they had there. I remember the day in ninth grade when my dad checked me and my siblings out of school early to go see The Phantom Menace on opening day. How could I forget those awkward teenage feelings of “Padme is so hot” and the weird crush on her in Attack of the Clones. Obi Wan Kenobi is easily my favorite Jedi from the movies, and one of my favorite overall from the whole universe.. Ewan McGregor became one of my favorite actors because of how well he performed in his role as Obi Wan. And those lightsaber battles between Obi-Wan and Anakin as well as Yoda and Emperor Palpatine…it’s not possible to forget those.
As I have grown older, I have been able to not only watch the movies again and again, but I had become a huge fan of the Expanded Universe. I really enjoyed reading about Luke Skywalker and his wife Mara Jade. I loved watching Jacen Solo become Darth Caedus and equally enjoyed seeing Jaina Solo rise to the mantle of the Sword of the Jedi. And then Luke Skywalker in exile with his son Ben trying to figure out how Jacen turned….that was a journey I loved being a part of more than most.
Another thing I have loved is the Old Republic era of Star Wars…KOTOR 1 and 2 were some of my favorite games and Revan is right up there with Obi Wan as one of my all time favorite Jedi. I played very faithfully Star Wars The Old Republic on my computer for a couple of years and enjoyed all the Star Wars lore I got to read and see there. Revan the book has one of my all time favorite Star Wars moments…it’s so good to me, I wont even paraphrase it, but will rather have it word for word below: “I am Revan reborn,” he said to Nyriss. “And before me you are nothing.” Revan then proceeds to catch the force lighting being thrown towards him and redirects it at the Dark Council member who is killed almost instantly. What a powerful dude…someone who can control both the light and the dark sides of the force and use it for good.
I remember the day that I heard the news about Disney buying Star Wars. I had mixed feelings. I was excited to hear that there would be more Star Wars movies. Then the bad news came….the expanded universe was no longer canon. I was heartbroken. How was I just supposed to let go of all the things I had experienced with Luke and Ben Skywalker? How was I going to just forget the plot twist with Jacen Solo’s daughter and the emergence of a Sith Lord as powerful as Luke Skywalker. These things were so important to me and I had so much I was looking forward to…but that all went away. Here I am today though…still a little sad but in the final stages of acceptance. I am thrilled to be able to see the new expanded universe that Disney is planning for Star Wars. It’s going to be super awesome.
One of the biggest things happening is of course Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens. This is a big deal…this is probably one of the biggest historical moments in the geek world to date. A new saga for the Star Wars cinematic universe is finally here. And that teaser trailer…how magnificent and uninformative!!! So much greatness and so little information…I guess that is how J.J. Abrams works. As a courtesy to all my fellow geeks, I have posted the link to the teaser trailer below. If you have not seen the trailer, stop everything you are doing and watch it. If you have seen it, go watch it again. Its time to get psyched up about this. 2015 means less than a year till an epic film that has no inclusion of Jar Jar Binks!!!
Star Wars is a part of my life in a way that very few things are. I am and always will be a fan of Star Wars. I can not wait to share it with my children. Star Wars has helped shape me into the geek I am today, and for that I am forever grateful. To all my geeks…May the Force be with you!
