I love superhero movies. I make an effort to see every single one that comes out. For certain titles, I make sure I am at the midnight showing on opening night. I love being able to see everything that happens in the movie, process it during the following days, and then go see the movie in theaters again at least once before they come out. I make sure to purchase the movies and watch them again at home…Some people might get tired of watching the same movies multiple times, but I love it, especially when it concerns superheroes. So I will list here my top 5 superhero films within the past ten years and a short explanation for them all.
1. Man of Steel
Could I honestly say I am a true Superman fan if I put this any lower on the list? Let me state first…I loved the portrayal of Superman by Christopher Reeve and will always respect him for the way he did so. I also love how Superman or Clark Kent have been portrayed by people like Dean Cain, Tom Welling and Brandon Routh. But my favorite portrayal of Superman is by Henry Cavill. He did phenomenal in Man of Steel. He was able to show the nature of Superman/Clark Kent very well. The movie really showed a hero that is a symbol of hope. A hero that truly loves the people he protects. A hero that values human life, even if he did take one at the end of the film. Man of Steel was a wonderful representation of the hero I love. The visual effects were awesome too. The soundtrack is epic…I love jamming out to the whole soundtrack in my car because it makes me feel epic. This movie was awesome and I can’t wait to see what happens in the newly established DC cinematic universe.
2. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Wow. I have enjoyed almost every single Marvel movie so far, but this one is my favorite of them all. Captain America stands for truth, justice, and the American way and Chris Evans does a great job of portraying this. I love how realistic this movie is. The whole government conspiracy and an attempt at a hostile takeover was way cool to me. I loved seeing how embedded Hydra was within S.H.I.E.L.D. and the sacrifices that were made to stop them. I thought it was a very well written story and a very well-directed movie.
3. The Dark Knight
I love Batman almost as much as I love Superman. In the Dark Knight trilogy, I feel that Christopher Nolan did his best work in this film. Christian Bale was exceptional as Batman (and I don’t mind the voice he uses as Batman…it’s fun to imitate). Heath Ledger, in my opinion, was the best Joker out of them all. It’s as if he came straight out of the recent comic books…chaotic, evil, and determined to play a lifelong game with Batman. I loved the mix of humor and fear throughout the film. This was the defining movie of the Dark Knight trilogy and will be on the top superhero movies lists for years to come.
4. Guardians of the Galaxy
This movie was an awesome addition to the Marvel Universe. I feel like the hype for this movie was really low before it came out, but once it hit theaters, people couldn’t get enough of it. It had excellent actors in each role, it had plenty of humor (I still laugh at the funny quips in it, even after several times of watching it), and it had one of the most lovable characters ever. Groot, how I love you. Might I add that the soundtrack is full of awesome hits. Since my father was a DJ in his early twenties and still has a massive record collection, I was familiar with almost all of the songs and loved hearing them in the movie. This film set the stage for the Avengers: Infinity War and set the bar really high for all future Marvel films.
Robert Downey Jr. and Tony Stark are the same man. There is no doubt in my head. Seeing him in Iron Man was like watching an actual comic book in real life. He jumped off the pages into the silver screen perfectly. Iron Man is also where the whole Marvel cinematic Universe really started as one giant connection ball of awesomeness. I love watching this and seeing how Marvel has really kept all the movies connected. Iron Man set the standard for all Marvel movies in regards to clips after the credits and with continuity. A great film for a great universe.
These are my top 5, and there is plenty of potential for these to change as the 20-30 superhero movies come out over the next 5-6 years. What are your thoughts? What are your favorite superhero movies? Feel free to comment with your thoughts!!!
