My Top 5 Companions
As a long time Whovian, and by that I mean starting more than five years ago, I have a bit of a non-conventional list of my top companions.
The first time I watched Doctor Who was with my dad, and it was right when Nine had regenerated into Ten. To say the least I was very confused, Rose and her mum were freaking out about him not waking up to save the planet and as a “younger” kid I was mad at him too. But all I could focus on was why Roses mom was wearing so much eye makeup… But that was my first initial introduction to the crazy man in the blue box.
Now it is to be noted that these are my opinions, you may disagree with me or if I’m lucky you’ll agree! So let’s get started shall we?
One: This isn’t just one person. It’s Amy and Rory! I love everything about them, the story line entwining with eleven in the most of unpredictable ways and River? Ah, I absolutely love it. But the reason they are my number one is because I relate more to them more than the other companions. I was deeply into syfy love stories as I was searching for my own love story at the time so I lived vicariously. Sometimes I’ll go back and watch their seasons just because, but if I watch “The Engels Take Manhattan” it’s a guaranteed cry.
Two: Some don’t consider Jack Harkness as a text book “companion” but with the work he did with ten was rather wonderful. And his sexuality in the show was new to BBC, the man would flirt with a rock if it looked at him and it usually did. It was a great pleasure to see him on the Torchwood show, then as a villain in Arrow.
Three: Same as above, a nonconventional companion. But does it count when it’s Elevens wife? Technically a life companion? She’s the right bit of sass and her storyline (with Amy and Rory) is so far my favorite to watch. And oh my, “spoilers” is the best little phrase in the series so far! She also was in Arrow for a few episodes and I remember being slightly upset because she didn’t have her big curly hair…
Four: The one and only Dona Noble. I also feel incredibly bad for her *SPOLIERS* I mean how could you not? She was the most important person in the universe, she has extreme self-doubt before Ten came along. Many women, and men, who relate to her were deeply involved in her story. She was a sassy little red head with much needed stubborn attitude which saved many lives including her own. She wanted to save everybody, and she tried so very hard. The episode that brought out her savior side was the “Fires of Pompeii”. Which funny enough is where we meet Peter Capaldi, the newly Twelve Doctor. I know I wasn’t the only one who had my heart broken when she forgot everything… still makes my heart sting when thinking about it.
Five: And lastly, Rose Tyler. I know, she’s everyone’s number one, but not mine. I liked her most when nine regenerated because she had a hard time at first with him changing but she finally came to terms with it and they fell in love. Her story was indeed beautifully told, he lost and found her one true love over again, so much hurt and so much pain. But in my opinion there are better companions (ones that I personally can connect with better). Something about my first impression of her threw me a bit. But it was a great ending for her to have Ten in human form (if only a copy) so she could have her happily ever after, live we all hope and wish for. S
Hope you enjoyed getting a peek into a fellow whovians mind. GERONIMO! -Erika Startup
